What began as a night of homecoming celebrations in Mississippi ended in tragedy as two separate shootings on opposite sides of the state left at least eight people dead and many others injured. Authorities confirmed that the incidents occurred Friday night following high school football games.
Six Killed in Leland Shooting
In the city of Leland, located in Mississippi’s Delta region, six people were killed after gunfire erupted downtown following a local high school homecoming game. Washington County Coroner La’Quesha Watkins confirmed that four victims died at the scene and two later succumbed to their injuries at a nearby hospital.
Dozens Injured and Several in Critical Condition
Approximately 20 people were injured in the Leland shooting, according to state Senator Derrick Simmons. Four of the injured victims were in critical condition and were airlifted from a Greenville hospital to a larger medical center in Jackson. Authorities continue to investigate the chaotic scene.
A Small Town in Shock
By Saturday morning, yellow police tape surrounded parts of downtown Leland. The scene of devastation stood near a sign honoring soul singer Tyrone Davis, a native of the area. Families gathered outside City Hall seeking answers as law enforcement officers maintained tight control over the investigation site.
Witnesses Describe a Chaotic Scene
Witness Camish Hopkins described the moment of terror, recalling seeing multiple people wounded and several lying lifeless on the ground. “It was the most horrific scene I’d ever seen,” Hopkins said, adding that police shouted for crowds to stay back as panic spread through the area.
Lawmakers Condemn the Violence
Senator Simmons called the event “senseless gun violence,” lamenting the widespread circulation of firearms across communities. He noted that the normally peaceful town of fewer than 4,000 residents had been devastated by the incident. As of Saturday morning, no arrests had been announced, and no suspects identified.
Second Shooting in Heidelberg
On the opposite side of Mississippi, another tragedy unfolded in the small town of Heidelberg during its homecoming weekend. Police confirmed that two people were killed on a school campus Friday night, though authorities have not disclosed whether the victims were students.
Suspect at Large in Eastern Mississippi
Heidelberg Police Chief Cornell White said an 18-year-old man was being sought for questioning. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office urged anyone with information to come forward. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is assisting local and federal agencies in the ongoing investigation.
Governor Responds to the Shootings
Governor Tate Reeves expressed condolences to the victims’ families and both affected communities. “Our state is praying for the victims and their families,” he said, vowing that “those responsible will be brought to justice.” Reeves confirmed that state and federal investigators are collaborating closely on all three cases.
A Third Shooting Under Review
Authorities also reported a third, unrelated shooting in Sharkey County, another Mississippi Delta community. Sheriff Herbert Ceaser Sr. confirmed that two individuals had been arrested following gunfire at a local school after its football game. No details regarding injuries have been released.
Communities United in Grief
The string of shootings has left Mississippi communities reeling. What should have been nights of pride and celebration turned into scenes of mourning and fear. As investigations continue, residents across the state are calling for stronger efforts to end the cycle of gun violence plaguing their towns.
